Melody Olunne Amadi, professionally known as ‘Melodi’, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter of the Afrobeats, R&B, Soul, Afro-soul genres. Born and raised in the city of Port Harcourt, Melodi is a star on the rise with a pre-destined journey in music.

She comes from a musically inclined family, with her parents deeply ingrained in the classical music community of the Anglican communion in Port Harcourt; her father a euphonious tenor singer, her mother a passionate soprano and a choir mistress with a deep love for children’s singing, an older brother currently studying music at the University of Port Harcourt who is a trumpeter as well as the founder of a band that focuses on teaching drums/wind instruments and another older brother who is a keyboardist and a tenor singer as well.

Armed with an earnest prayer from a mother to birth a child that would finish the journey in music that she could not, it is no surprise that Melodi continues to form her own identity in music away from typical mainstream influences and focuses on integrating her life’s experiences, as well as those of the people around her and the culture from the city she calls home, with her background in music to create inexplicable rhythms that speak to your soul.

With an object of affection in mind, her debut EP titled ‘Something In A Name’, is a display of sonic range mixed with the emotions of a girl unfortunate in love or as she likes to call it, “the tales of an unfortunate lover girl”.

The project starts off with a pathetic declaration to the object of her unrequited affection in Yabaleft and Away. Both are a cool yet audacious expression of this love, the lengths she will go for her lover and her passionate longing for his body, in classic rhythmic and acoustic delivery. Only You is a leap into a different story with Melodi addressing the reality of the fleeting love that comes with fame and restating the importance of looking out for oneself. On Silent, she is fed up
with the games, chooses to take her own advice on the previous song and put herself first, picks up what’s left of her pride, refuses to be gaslit and sucked back into another toxic cycle with her lover, so she chooses to be… Silent .

The end of the project is laden with an overwhelming feeling of resignation but then hope. On These Days, she accepts that the demise of this love story was never her fault and she’s just done but Better Offer is a descriptive rendition of a girl that has been hurt in love and decides to shut her heart but finds someone new that she’s willing to go all in for again without thinking of
how bad she’s been treated before.
