What Surprised Us About the AMVCA Nominations

AMVCA nominations dropped two days ago and there were a few surprises, let’s talk about them.

1. Chimezie Imo not getting any nominations
AMVCA

Of course there’s the big obvious one, Chimezie Imo not getting any nominations at all. After his outstanding performance in Breath of Life, he should have gotten nominated for Best Lead Actor or Best Supporting Actor. No nominations at all?? This was a big snub. Meanwhile his co-star, Genoveva was nominated as Best supporting actress (Congratulations to her by the way, she deserves it) and Chimezie wasn’t even mentioned anywhere

2. Tobi Makinde didn’t get nominated for best supporting actor for his role in “a Tribe Called Judah”.

A whole shinene didn’t get nominated?? Tobi acted that role so well, I started to feel like that’s how he acts in real life. Either him or Uzor Arukwe , our wicked greedy chairman, should have been nominated for best supporting actor for “A Tribe called Judah”.

3. “Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi story” wasn’t nominated for best movie.

This is shocking because first of all, it has nominations in other major categories: “Best Writing Movie”, “Best Director”, and “Best Lead Actor”. On top of that, it was one of the biggest movies to be released last year. It very much deserved to be nominated for Best movie

4. “Over the Bridge” having the highest number of nominations.

From what I’ve heard from many, Over the Bridge is a great movie and it deserves its AMVCA nominations. I haven’t seen it, because it hasn’t screened publicly in Nigeria yet (it was screened privately at AFRIFF last year). How does a movie that hasn’t screened publicly in Nigeria, have the highest number of nominations? Not saying it doesn’t deserve the nominations, it’s just a bit surprising.

5. “Skinny Girl in Transit (S7)” getting nominated for Best Writing TV series.

I’ve loved every season of SGIT except season 7. You know why? Because I can’t seem to figure out the storyline; I can’t tell where the story is heading. Most people would agree with me when I say this is not SGIT’s best season in terms of writing. It’s quite surprising that’s it’s getting nominated in the Best Writing TV series category.
